The July 4th boat parade is a decades long tradition on Pike Lake, and it’s back again for America’s 250th birthday! See more information below about this years’ parade. The parade starts at 12PM in front of the Pike Lake Golf and Beach Club, and as per tradition will be lead by the Riley’s.
Leave No Trace
This year, the PLAA is strongly discouraging the use of water balloons during the boat parade. Instead, we recommend purchasing squirt guns or water cannons to maintain the same level of fun!
Why the change now?
Easy: water balloons have long been part of the parade, however in the last 5 years the use and quantity of them has escalated. In it’s simplest form, water balloons are litter. Even biodegradable water balloons take years to break down - in the mean time, they pollute the lake, impact the fish and bird population, and generally go against what we all love which is a clean, healthy lake.
This isn’t just about environmental impact - a dirty lake can impact property values and the long term viability of the lake years down the road. Let’s show our lake the respect it deserves by not littering thousands of water balloons this year.
In terms of the alternative, there are several great squirt gun/water cannon options on the market, with prices ranging from $15 to $200+ for an electric model. Here are some top recommendations spanning various budgets (thanks, ChatGPT):
Stream Machine QF-2000 (Best for Maximum Range): This classic 29.5-inch pump-action water launcher operates by manually submerging the barrel and thrusting the handle. It delivers a powerful stream up to an impressive 70 feet. Browse the selection on DICK'S Sporting Goods.
SpyraFour Electric Water Blaster (Best for High-Tech Power): Built for competitive soaking, this pro-model electric blaster features a 50+ foot range and shoots individual, targeted water bullets. It automatically reloads in seconds when dipped in water and includes an interactive LED display. Compare models on SPYRA.
Zuru X-Shot Fast-Fill (Best for Quick Refills): Rather than taking minutes to unscrew caps or pump repeatedly, the X-Shot allows you to dunk the entire gun in a pool or bucket and refill it in just 1 second. It reaches distances of 34 feet and is available on Walmart or Zuru Toys.
Flags Are Back
The July 4th boat parade is a staple in the Pike Lake community, and I personally highlight the day as one of my favorites of the year. Still, some residents do not wish to participate in the water balloon/squirt gun fights, but often end up caught in the crossfire.
Back for the second year is the flag system, which will provide an easy visual cue on the intentions of another boat.
White flag = I am here to participate in the parade but do not wish to be “fired” on, and will not do so towards others
Pirate flag = bring it on
At our last board meeting, we voted to approve the purchase of 12”x18” flags which you can get FOR FREE 3 ways:
At the July 4th breakfast (from 8:30-10AM at the Pike Lake Golf & Beach Club event center)
Via jet ski immediately before the parade for those unable to make the breakfast
You may message me to coordinate flag pick up at my house.
These flags will be FREE of charge, 1 per boat please as we have limited quantities.
Note: this is not an officially sponsored/sanctioned event of the PLAA, we are merely facilitating flag distribution on behalf of our members.
